CPSC 270: Applied Entomology

Course Description This course provides (1) an introduction to the biology and identification of insects and (2) an introduction to insect pest management. Emphasis is placed on the application of entomology in agriculture and everyday life. The course includes lecture and laboratory components; students are required to make an insect collection.

Same as IB 220, and NRES 270.

Course Objectives Upon completing this course, students:
  1. Will be able to identify major orders and some major families of insects by sight or with a key;

  2. Will understand the life histories of the major groups of insects;

  3. Will be able to explain why certain insects are pests or beneficial species;

  4. Will be able to use available references to identify key pests of several crops or environments and common beneficial insects;

  5. Will be able to describe chemical and non-chemical approaches to insect control.

Requirements Fulfilled Required of certain options for majors in Crop Sciences, Horticulture, and Forestry. Meets General Education requirements for a natural sciences course with a lab
Grading Grading is based on two lecture exams (40 points), two lab exams (20 points), an insect collection (20 points), daily notes (10 points) and "creature features" (10 points).

<60 F
Plus and minus designations are used for point totals in the upper and lower 2 or 3 points of each grade bracket.
