| Course Description | This course examines the theoretical bases for plant breeding procedures with special emphasis on the relationship between type and source of genetic variability, mode of reproduction, and effectiveness of different selection procedures. Included is the use of modern molecular techniques in plant breeding. |

| Course Objectives | The objectives of the course are to provide the student with a firm theoretical basis for selecting appropriate plant breeding procedures, regardless of crop, and for developing improved procedures incorporating the most modern genetic and statistical techniques. |

| Prerequisites | CPSC 453 and CPSC 540, or equivalent. |
| Requirement(s) Fulfilled | This is a graduate level course which is usually included in the programs of all plant breeding graduate students. |
| Grading | Grades are based on three hour examinations (65%), a final examination (30%), and participation in discussion sessions (5%). |
